SIGHT-READING FOR SINGERS & PIANISTS!
Sight-reading is the practice of reading and playing the notes in a song on the piano or any other instrument. Vocal sight-reading describes the ability of a singer who can read and sing the music at first sight. Sight-reading is also called prima vista, which means “at first sight” in Italian. Whether you are a singer or pianist, it is important to develop your musical ear while you are learning to sight-read. All talented and accomplished musicians have an amazing musical ear.
Here are some ways to develop your musical ear:
- Listen to the melody of a song and try to find the notes you are singing on the piano or any other instrument.
- Turn the radio on to a familiar tune. Listen to the drums and figure out the groove pattern.
- Try to figure out what the keyboard or piano is playing in that song.
- Try to figure out what notes are being sung by the background singers.
- What kind of strumming (fast/slow) and what chord progressions is the guitar playing.
- Now turn the radio of and imagine hearing the melody in your head.
- Now try to sing the melody out loud and play it on an instrument.
Some musicians are born with a natural “ear” for hearing and being able to match the pitch. Others (the majority of us) need to work on this regularly. The more you work at it, the better you will become as a singer, pianist or any other type of musician.
