SINGING ON PITCH!

One of the most important characteristics of a singer is vocal control and the ability to listen to yourself and sing “on pitch” (singing right on the note)! A good voice embodies fine technique, which requires you to sing notes with good pitch, not singing a little higher (sharp) or lower (flat). If you have ever heard someone sing and thought, they can’t sing. That’s because they are not on the note, they are flat or sharp. From time to time a good vocalist might hit a pitchy note, but that is not what we are addressing today. We are discussing consistently pitchy notes, not one or two scatter throughout a song.

The key is listening to yourself when you sing! It can be devasting to record yourself at the beginning, I do not normally recommend it. But, if you think your voice sounds terrible, it’s not your tone (how your voice sounds). It sounds bad because you are not singing right on the note. Either you are a little bit higher or lower than the note. Cultivating a good voice takes practice to maintain good pitch throughout the song. So, when you practice make sure you are singing on pitch. Try putting your finger in one ear as you sing or use an ear plug. This will help you hear yourself better as you sing to the karaoke track. If you sing with the artist and never sing alone, you will have trouble improving. If you play the piano, try and find the notes on the piano as you sing.

The best way to do this is to record yourself when you practice. As you play the recording and find places that don’t sound right. Highlight them on a lyric sheet where you think you sound bad and work on that specific area. Try to slightly raise or lower the note. If you are working with a vocal coach, they can find the notes on the piano and play them for you. Having self-awareness (being aware of how you sound) is actually one of the first major steps to becoming a good singer. This is an excellent way to training your ear…listen to yourself!

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

What is the definition of a mezzo soprano?
Just an alto with a soprano’s attitude.
