3 EASY STEPS TO EXPAND YOUR RANGE

It is possible to expand your vocal range at any age. If you just started singing or maybe you’ve been singing for a decade, you can always work on extend your vocal range. There are a few things you need to do to lengthen your singing range higher and lower.

First, it is very important to use proper technique, which means keeping your larynx in a rest position, never forcing it up or down (allowing it to rise or fall naturally). Singing with an open throat (blog 11/27/20 “Moving From One Register To Another”) and make sure you utilize your diaphragm, which provides breath support (blog 11/25/20 “Holding Notes With Confidence”). Maintaining proper vocal technique will help you reach those high and low notes without damage to your vocal cords.

The second component is to set small goals. Set a realistic goal by increasing your range one half step, both at the bottom and top of your vocal range, each week or month. The time frame depends on how often you practice. When you set a goal for yourself, be realistic and patient.

One last thing, do your vocal exercises regularly! Doing daily vocal exercises is the fastest way to increase your vocal range. A daily, 30 minute, vocal workout with exercises is crucial. When you finish the exercises use your vocal workout playlist with songs that will challenge you (See 12/2/20 blog “Create Your Vocal Workout Playlist).

Expanding your vocal range won’t happen overnight. Using proper technique, setting realistic goals and using your daily vocal exercises will help you hit higher and lower notes. If you are consistent with your daily exercises you will see improvement and your range will increase.
