AUDITION TIPS FOR YOU!
Singing, piano and acting auditions are a difficult art to master. The whole process of an audition can be very nerve racking. Here are some tips to help you crush your next audition!
Always be prepared! If you have rehearsed the song thoroughly and have put in the time to prepare, you will be much more at ease. It’s important to keep your voice and piano fingers are in tiptop shape. Singing and playing piano everyday is essential for keeping your performance chops in great shape and make sure you warm up before the audition. Know your material, memorize the song and have a backup song ready. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the audition. If you are in a rush, your anxiety level will be much higher. Pad an extra 20 minutes into your travel, parking, and finding the room for your audition.
Present the song in a new and fresh way! Act like this is the very first time the casting director has heard the song. The best way to tell a story is to assume that no one has every heard it before. Therefore, you can create a new adventure for the casting agent(s) and introduce your interpretation of the song.
Do your research and know what you are auditioning for, whether it is for a character, band, movie roll, or variety show; know the show! Choose a song that suits you, flatters your voice and speaks to you; if the song speaks to you there will be emotion in your singing or playing. Make sure you connect to the song and feel it.
Presentation – walk into the audition room bold as a lion! Dress to impress, if you feel good about your appearance it will show (make sure you wear comfortable shoes). You must exude confidence, you only get one chance at standing out and making a dazzling first impressions, shoulders back, hold your head high, make eye contact and smile; smile right through fear. You cannot prevent feeling fear, you have to walk through it.
When you are singing or playing, use natural movements to perform; do not just stand (or sit) like a statue and perform, use your hands and do not lock your knees. Sing out and give them a good show for the next five minutes. If you make a mistake, pretend like it was intentional and keep going. Do not make faces, act through the fear and tell the story. Your confidence is key! A friendly, smiling face and kindness makes the auditioning process easier for everyone.
