BUILDING YOUR CONFIDENCE FOR SINGERS OR PIANISTS!

Updated: 4 days ago

One of the most important qualities a singer or pianist can possess is confidence! The more you perform the more your confidence will grow. This is a key issue for your development if you want to be a performing artist. Being confident is nothing more than believing in yourself; confidence comes from within. Negative thoughts invade everyone’s lives, no one is immune from self-doubt and the pessimistic inner thoughts. The cynical self-talk can start first thing in the morning before you even get out of bed.

You cannot stop negative thoughts from entering your mind, but you do not have to dwell on them. You can get rid of them. Think of your thoughts as a fly landing on your food, but you have the power swat the fly away. It is the same concept with your thoughts, when a negative thought lands in your brain immediately speak back, “no that’s not true” shoo it away and replace it with a good thought. Positive thoughts (affirmations) will build your self-confidence and can transform your life if done on a daily basis.

To build confidence as a singer it is important to warm up with vocal and breathing exercises. Proper posture makes you feel confident; try this, slouch your shoulders and drop your head a little looking down. Now, push your shoulders back, head straight up like a string was pulling your head up to the sky and smile. Notice how different you feel instantly.

Another thing that builds your confidence is daily practice to help perfect your vocals. Also, try singing in front of your family or friends, have a karaoke night. Recording yourself objectively (as if you were listening to someone else) this allows you to hear your current strengths and weakness, and work on them.

What does it mean to play piano with confidence? For many piano students, that feeling of confidence is not an easily obtained. Sitting down to play can create feeling of self-doubt and anxiety. It’s important to have proper posture while playing. Sitting up straight, don’t slouch and keep proper distance from the piano so that your fingers align with the keys. Practicing daily, even if it is for a short time and try recording your practice. Listen to the recording and focus on improving and not putting yourself down; never compare yourself with others. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, focus on the strengths and work on the weaknesses.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

Why does the orchestra have bad manners? Because it doesn't know how to conduct itself.
