DEVELOPING YOUR MIXED VOICE

Your middle voice is the bridge between your head voice and your chest voice. Singing in your middle voice is also called a mixed voice, which means you are combining the head and chest voice. Singing in a mixed voice will produce a fuller sound. It is the bridge or gap between the chest and head voice. Singing in a mixed voice will allow you to sing smoothly into the next register without gaps or a shift in your voice.

How to develop your mixed voice is a continuous blend of the registers through vocal exercises. The Bubble (or lip rolls) and the R Roll (or tongue trills like rolling your R’s in Spanish) are an easy way to create a natural blending of your registers. These two exercises will help you move from one register to another without even thinking about it. Your voice should seamlessly move from one register to another effortlessly. If you have difficulties with the Bubble or R Roll you can try humming through the exercises, keep the hum going while exhaling a little at a time with a steady but minimal stream of air.

Now try the exercises with the Nay or Na sound. This exercise will create a resonance (vibration feeling) in your nasal cavity; singing in the mask. Notice where your chest & middle register break into the middle and head register. This is a very gradual process and will take some time to develop. Listen to Audrey Diaz , who has mastered the mixed voice, sing "Love In The Dark"!
