Negative thoughts invade everyone’s lives, no one is immune from self-doubt and the pessimistic inner thoughts. The cynical self-talk can start first thing in the morning before you even get out of bed. If you have a singing engagement or performance playing the piano and you wake up in the morning plagued with negative thoughts that play over and over again in your mind, what do you do?

I tell my clients this one very important fact, you cannot stop negative thoughts from entering your mind, but you do not have to dwell on them. You can get rid of them. Think of your thoughts as a fly landing on your food, but you have the power swat the fly away; just used your hand and swat it away. It is the same concept with your thoughts, when a negative thought lands in your brain immediately speak back, “no that’s not true” shoo it away and replace it with a good thought. Negative thoughts like to be in control, but you respond immediately with a positive thought replacement.

It will take some effort in the beginning. Maybe you’ve never realized all the negative thoughts that you play over and over again in your mind, like a broken record. But you can start today, by paying attention to what your inner thoughts are telling you and make sure the thoughts are positive like “I’m going to do a great job!” or “this is going to be a fantastic show.” Start first thing in the morning before you even get out of bed. When you wake up, what are you thinking? Pay attention to your inner self talk, it will make all the difference in the world.

These thoughts will create a better singing voice and a more accomplished musician; remember you are what you think! (See the blog 3/4/21 “It’s A Mental Thing”).

Why is a piano so hard to open? Because the keys are inside!
