Sing Or Play Piano Like A Pro

Updated: 4 days ago

To sing or play like a pro you must have the ability to "keep time" (timing or rhythm) accurately and to synchronize (play at the same time) with other instruments or singers. A steady tempo is one of the easiest ways to tell an amateur from a professional. An audience has the ability to feel the beat while listening to music. So much so, that any deviations from the rhythm are immediately noticed and can give the audience an uneasy feeling that things aren’t quite right. For this reason, if you want to become a successful musician or singer, developing a strong sense of musical timing: it is extremely important!

This exercise will help with timing; listen to the song “We Will Rock You” and count or tap with your hand, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4. The more you do this the more you’ll notice when you’re dragging or rushing the tempo. The more you practice with your listening music, the more you’ll find yourself tapping to the beat. Tapping or clapping to the beat is essentially the same thing as playing with a metronome to keep time, it’s a little bit more engaging than the simple boring ticking of the metronome. You should practice with a metronome when you are playing the piano. For a singer, if you are singing the National Anthem, practice with a metronome; pull up metronomes on YouTube, search metronome 3/4 (time signature) and 92 bpm (beats per minute).

One thing every singer or pianist should do is record yourself singing or playing a full song, beginning to end. This will give you an honest assessment of where your timing is now. If you listen carefully you should be able to hear the parts where you’re slowing down or speeding up. Listen closely for each place you made a mistake with the tempo.

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

What is a cat's favorite song? Three Blind Mice!
