SINGING IS PHYSICAL EXERCISE!

If you’ve never jogged and go out for a run, you probably will not go far and your muscles will be tired when you are done. If you’ve never jogged and decided to run a marathon, chances are you will injure yourself. You have to build up muscle strength and stamina. It’s the same concept with singing. It is a physical exercise of the muscles in your throat, chest and diaphragm which take time to build the muscle stamina. When you put your all into your singing, it takes a lot of physical energy to perform a song correctly.

You need to get into shape, especially if you want to belt out those notes. Even if you have good technique, start slowly, warm up, take breaks and drink plenty of water. It’s just like working out, running, yoga and other physical exercise. I always tell my students, if you feel like you’ve strained your voice or have a scratchy throat, you can still Bubble, R Roll or Hum through the songs without causing any strain and it keeps your voice in shape.

It’s important to mix up your vocal practice by working on runs one day, head voice next, on the third day work with belting, etc. You can do this by choosing certain songs to work on each day. Keep your practice versatile and fun. Choose certain artists for different vocal techniques. I like Christina Aguilera for belting and runs, Sheryl Crow for lower register, lighter belting, and holding vowel sound solid with no vibrato. I will use the Eagles for mixed voice and lower register vocal workouts as well. Listen to Woody Chung as he singing Japanese Denim and puts so much into his performance with his entire body!

JOKE FOR THE DAY:

What is a golfer’s favorite type of music?
